Visual & Performing Arts: Flamenco

Flamenco

A true eclectic gathering of movement and music, flamenco evolved from many historical influences—Hindu dance, mimes of imperial Rome, Jewish chanting, Moorish singing—wrapped with the intensity and emotion of the Gypsies.

Today, flamenco is best experienced in the private settings off the beaten path, and by learning the dance yourself. Spanish guitar blends with singing, chanting, and taccato hand clapping. The dancer performs with deepening emotion through steps, gestures and posture opening the way to el duende, an inspired expression of soulful dancing.

Spain is also a renowned center of ballet and modern dance.
